GEN Z UBUNTU

Ubuntu. This word came up while I was watching a docuseries on Netflix titled The Playbook. This is a philosophy Boston Celtic`s coach Doc Rivers indoctrinated in his team. Looking deeper into the philosophy I learned that it is an African Philosophy emphasizing community and collective wellbeing. The mountains never run dry; Africa however is running out of Ubuntu. Gen Z is a troubled generation. With high cases of anxiety, depression, loneliness and lack of purpose. I attribute this to the lack of safe spaces.

Humans, throughout their years of development have always relied on mature individuals for provision. This is true for emotional support and security. It explains why our fathers would consult with the elders from time to time. The Gen Z is living at a point where everyone is trying to figure out life. Be it the economic turbulence or technological advancements, all are troubled. Since no one is available, people are burying their uncertainties in social media which is a mirage of illusion that heightens the troubles.

I am an idealist. I am also aware that the world wouldn`t care less about my ideals. It is for this reason I work with the world as it is. Since there is no longer saving the world, why not make it through with fewer scars? Kenya now leads globally in social media usage. A six-year-old has had more screentime than time they`ll spend talking to their fathers in their lifetime. Why not create spaces that let people know that “I see you, and you matter”. Avenues that would offer unconditional regard, judgement-free zones and confidentiality.

With such measures, we`d have a more mentally stable generation. The platforms would create micro communities around them. Talk of the developers creating the platforms, the wellness influencers and professionals in relevant fields, they would all have more opportunities to practice and make an impact. At such a point there would be more resilient youths who can overcome fear of failure, venture into new grounds and without doubt learn and cultivate their purpose.

Since technology is an extension of man, we need to up our social game. Let us have more people in our social orbit and know what`s going on in their world. Be the one to put down your phone and listen, make eye contact and offer life changing words like “I`m here. You can talk to me.”
